Knight Gets Slapped on Wrist by Indiana for Incident With Soviets

Basketball Coach Bob Knight of Indiana University was reprimanded by the school Tuesday for pulling his team off the court during an exhibition game Saturday night against the Soviet Union’s national team.

A statement issued by the university news bureau said Knight realizes he “had made a serious mistake of judgment” and that his actions had caused “great embarrassment not only to himself and the basketball program, but also, and most importantly, to the entire university and its supporters.”

Knight, who later apologized, was charged with three technical fouls in the game, pulling his team off the court when he got the third about five minutes into the second half. The Soviets, leading at the time, 66-43, were declared winners by forfeit.

Big Ten Commissioner Wayne Duke said he will consult with people involved but that the conference has no jurisdiction, since the game was an international one.
