West Hollywood : News Plans for Civic Center
The City Council has moved closer to selecting West Hollywood Park as the site for a new Civic Center.
At an informal meeting on Monday night, architects Edmund W. Chang and Robert Sherman said their latest plan for the center would increase space devoted to buildings at West Hollywood Park from 31,315 square feet to 68,806 square feet while also increasing open and recreational space from 218,772 square feet to as much as 283,803 square feet.
They said their plan calls for the elimination of ground-level parking lots in favor of subterranean parking.
Although the City Council did not make a decision on the design or the location of the proposed Civic Center, most council members said they saw nowhere else to put it in the densely populated city of 1.9 square miles. They also said the existing park was poorly designed.
But Council Member Steve Schulte, acknowledging that he was in the minority, said he was concerned that one of the few open spaces in the city would be changed for worse because of the proposed Civic Center.
“I wonder what it’ll be like when it’s done,” he said. “There may be recreation fields, but will it be a park?”
A final decision may be reached when the City Council considers further staff reports at its meeting on Jan. 4.
