SportsScope : Bruin Soccer Team to Play San Diego State in Quarterfinals
The UCLA soccer team will play at home Sunday in an NCAA Tournament quarterfinal against San Diego State. The game begins at 1 p.m. at UCLA’s north soccer field. The Bruins, 14-6-1, advanced last weekend due to a forfeit by Nevada-Las Vegas, which was dropped from the playoffs for using an ineligible player. San Diego State, 18-5, has defeated Southern Methodist and St. Louis in the playoffs. UCLA defeated the Aztecs earlier this season, 3-1, in San Diego with Nick Skvarna scoring twice in the second half. The Bruins are led by sophomore Bill Thompson with 7 goals and 7 assists and senior Jeff Hooker with 7 goals and 6 assists. San Diego is led by junior Kyle Whittemore’s 17 goals and 4 assists.
The UCLA and Pepperdine water polo teams will face each other at 6 p.m. Friday in the opening round of NCAA playoffs at Belmont Plaza Pool in Long Beach. The Bruins, 24-8, are seeded third while the Waves, 18-15, are seeded sixth. UCLA has defeated Pepperdine in three of four meetings this season. UC Berkeley is the top seed, followed by USC. Defending national champion Stanford is seeded fourth with UC Irvine fifth.
