Police Kill Pit Bull After Reported Attack

A San Diego police officer shot and killed a pit bull dog Friday morning after a neighbor complained that the animal had been chasing children through a residential area in San Ysidro.

Police said officers were told by a resident of the 300 block of West Park Avenue that the dog was running loose and had chased a group of children. The caller also told police that the dog had killed his own dog in a fight earlier in the week.

Police said they drove around the neighborhood and found the animal in the 100 block of East Seaward Avenue. While waiting for animal regulation officers to arrive, the dog bared its teeth and began to charge one of the police officers, police said.

Officer Tony Pellegrino fired his shotgun and wounded the dog, police said. The dog jumped back up and began to rush the officer again, when Pellegrino shot it a second time and killed the animal.
