Toshiba Corp. will import microwave ovens and color televisions from its U.S. unit as a result of the strong yen--the first imports by a Japanese electronics firm of completed products from a U.S. subsidiary.

Toshiba’s announcement was followed by word from another Japanese company, Matsuhita Electric Industrial, that it plans to begin shipping television sets made at its Franklin Park, Ill., plant to Japan. The number will be determined by demand and currency exchange rates. The company’s brand names include Panasonic and Quasar.

Japanese goods produced in the United States will cost less in dollars when sold outside Japan than goods made in Japan, where the strong yen makes them expensive to export.

A spokesman said Toshiba will import an initial 5,000 microwave ovens in January, 1988, from Toshiba America Inc. for sale beginning next March. No decision had been reached on the number of televisions to be imported. Subsequent imports will depend on the success of sales.
