Local News in Brief : Orange : Cancer Care Program Given 3-Year Approval
St. Joseph Hospital in Orange has received a three-year approval for its cancer care program from the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer.
St. Joseph officials say it’s the longest time period approval it has ever received.
The hospital this summer opened its $6 million Regional Cancer Center, which boasts the latest equipment aimed at treating deep-bone tumors and its concentration on specialized cancer nursing care.
“We’ve included all hospital services that a cancer patient might need available in one centralized, comfortable setting,” said Mary McKenzie, program administrator at the cancer center.
St. Joseph officials say that 68% of all cancer patients in the country are treated at hospitals approved by the surgeon group’s cancer commission. The commission’s national cancer program was set up in 1956. The commission is composed of Fellows from the surgeons group plus representatives from 24 other cancer-related organizations.
