John Boorman’s “Hope and Glory” was named best picture of 1987 on Tuesday by the movie arm of Britain’s Critics’ Circle. Boorman, who wrote and directed the Columbia release based on his own boyhood in England during World War II, received the award from Sir Richard Attenborough. Other top winners included Stanley Kubrick as best director for “Full Metal Jacket” and Alan Bennett for his screenplay, “Prick Up Your Ears.” The top acting award was shared by Gary Oldman for his work in “Ears” and Sean Connery for his work in “The Untouchables” and “Name of the Rose.” Kubrick, by the way, was one of only five non-Britons nominated in any category.
