Local News in Brief : Recall Drive Stumbles
Organizers of a month-old recall drive against Los Angeles City Councilman Robert Farrell announced Tuesday they would start over again because a “technical problem” clouds the validity of the initial filing papers.
Kerman Maddox, a former aide to Mayor Tom Bradley and a key figure in the recall effort, said organizers decided to file new papers after it was learned that one of the signers of the group’s notice of intent, James Lindsay, was not registered to vote within Farrell’s 8th District. Four thousand of the 12,500 signatures needed to force a recall election had been collected, Maddox said.
But what Maddox portrayed as a “reorganization,” Farrell portrayed as the death throes of the recall effort. Farrell, who won a narrow reelection in April, appeared at a press conference with several prominent black ministers, who are among his supporters, to declare victory over his opposition.
Under election procedures, the recall sponsors have 120 days to collect the needed signatures, beginning in 30 days.
