A Senate subcommittee approved a ban on the sale of Stinger anti-aircraft missiles to any nation in the Persian Gulf for one year. Arizona Democrat Dennis DeConcini, in proposing the restriction, said he was concerned that the deadly shoulder-fired missiles could fall into terrorists’ hands. The Reagan Administration had sought to sell 60 Stingers worth $7 million to Bahrain. DeConcini’s amendment, attached to a $13.1-billion foreign aid bill, can be challenged in the full committee or on the floor of the Senate. Last month, the House approved a similar ban on the sale of Stingers, except to NATO and other major allies such as Israel, unless there is congressional approval.
