France loves Jerry Lewis so much it gave him the Legion of Honor, and he hopes that affection will help make a success of his first French Muscular Dystrophy Telethon, which kicks off tonight in Paris. Lewis will be assisted by French stars and 8,000 volunteers who will staff 19 “promise centers” where money can be pledged. Antenne 2, a government-run station, is keeping most of its normal programming, but giving the telethon about six hours of air time in a 28-hour span.
