A Thousand Oaks woman died from two gunshot wounds to the head following an argument with her estranged husband in the parking lot of a fast-food restaurant Thursday night, sheriff’s deputies said.

Kathy Eileen Nicholson, 23, was shot twice with a handgun during the 8:30 p.m. incident at the McDonald’s restaurant at Janss and Moorpark roads in Thousand Oaks, Ventura County Sheriff’s Sgt. Gary Freeman said. Nicholson was taken to Los Robles Medical Center in Thousand Oaks, where she was pronounced dead, Freeman said.

Deputies questioned her estranged husband, David Nicholson, 24, at the scene, but he was not arrested, Lt. Larry Weimer said. He is stationed at Vandenberg Air Force Base near Lompoc, Weimer said.

The shots were apparently fired in a struggle over the gun, which is believed to have belonged to Kathy Nicholson, Weimer said. “It could be a homicide or it could have been an accident,” he said.

Detectives are continuing their investigation, Weimer said.
