Edwards’ Three-Point Shot Lifts Patrick Henry Past El Capitan

Greg Edwards made a three-point shot with two seconds to play in double overtime to lift Patrick Henry High School to a 52-50 nonleague victory over El Capitan in the season opener for both.

With the scored tied, 42-42, at the end of regulation, each team scored two points in the first overtime period. El Capitan scored first on a shot by Bryan Palmer. Patrick Henry countered with two free throws by Collis Hunt, who finished with a team-high 14 points.

Terrence Hamilton added 12 points for Patrick Henry. El Capitan was led by Brad Smith’s 14 points.

In other nonleague action:

Poway 74, Point Loma 67--Gabby Awbrey scored 18 points to lead four players in double figures to lead Poway in the season-opener for both at Poway. Point Loma closed to within four points late in the game, but Ty Nichols (14 points) made 3 of 4 free throws in the final 40 seconds to help lead Poway. Jason Jones had 16 points and Adam Jones had 12 points and 11 rebounds for Poway.

Serra 59, Orange Glen 55--Dexter Springall had 22 points and 13 rebounds to lead Serra at the Mt. Helix Tournament. Chris Ireland added 11 points for Serra (2-1). Both teams traded the lead in the fourth period.

Helix 74, St. Augustine 54--John Pressler scored 23 points and Mike Siepert added 13 for Helix (3-0) in the Mount Helix Tournament. St. Augustine is 2-1.

Mission Bay 63, Southwest 59--Keith Henderson scored 17 points and Peter Wilson added 14 to lead Mission Bay (1-1) in second round play of the Torrey Pines tournament. Mission Bay broke a 54-54 tie with two minutes left with a series of foul shots. Matt Silva paced Southwest (0-1) with 19 points.

Fallbrook 74, Rancho Buena Vista 49--Mike West scored 18 points and Todd Adamson and Jeff Pack had 12 points apiece to lead visiting Fallbrook (2-0) past Rancho Buena Vista in the Torrey Pines tournament. Fallbrook led 38-26 at halftime and extended its lead to 52-33 after three quarters. Todd Fellars led Rancho Buena Vista (0-2) with 12 points.
