Women’s Basketball Roundup : Iowa Hands CS Long Beach Its First Loss, 82-75

Forward Franthea Price and guard Michelle Edwards played key roles in leading Iowa past Cal State Long Beach, 82-75, Saturday in the first round of the Northern Illinois women’s basketball tournament at DeKalb, Ill.

Trailing at halftime, 35-32, the 49ers opened a 71-63 lead with 5:06 to play, but Price and Edwards each scored six points during a 16-2 run by Iowa.

Edwards finished with 21 points, 14 in the second half, and 12 assists. Price scored 22 points. The Hawkeyes are 4-0.

Guard Penny Toler led the 49ers (1-1) with 31 points and 7 assists. Shannon Smith scored 13 points and grabbed 16 rebounds.

Duke 78, USC 75--Center Sue Harnett’s basket with 24 seconds left gave the Blue Devils the victory over the Trojans in the opening round of the Providence tournament at Providence, R.I.

After Harnett’s basket, USC had a chance to come back but missed three inside shots. Harnett was fouled with five seconds to play and made two free throws to raise Duke is 3-0.

USC (0-2) was led by center Cherie Nelson, who scored 23 points. The Trojans will play Maine today in the consolation game.

Kate Meier scored 25 points and Chris Moreland had 20 to lead Duke, which plays Providence in today’s championship game.
