Share

A Buena Park woman and her two children were injured early Monday when their car swerved out of control on wet streets in Garden Grove and slammed into three parked city vehicles, including a street sweeper.

Patricia Ann Kelly, 26, and her son, Jason, 7, were in serious condition at Fountain Valley Regional Hospital and Medical Center following the 8 a.m. accident on Garden Grove Boulevard at Gilbert Street, hospital representatives said. Kelly’s daughter, Jacquelyn, 5, was treated and released at the same hospital.

At the time of the accident, a city street-sweeping crew was on a coffee break, standing outside the legally parked vehicles--a 25,000-pound street sweeper, a pickup and a car--on the south side of Garden Grove Boulevard, Garden Grove Police Lt. Ken Whitman said.

Kelly’s eastbound vehicle slammed into the pickup, which hit the city car. That car was shoved underneath the street sweeper and pushed it forward 15 feet, Whitman said.

The truck, the city car and Kelly’s car were demolished, but the sweeper sustained little damage, Whitman said.

Eastbound lanes of Garden Grove Boulevard were closed for two hours until the accident scene was cleaned up.
