Leafs Beat Wings in Overtime, 5-4

Russ Courtnall scored a power-play goal at 2:21 of overtime Monday night to give the Toronto Maple Leafs a 5-4 victory over the Detroit Red Wings.

With Detroit’s Doug Houda in the penalty box, Courtnall took a pass from Todd Gill and shot the puck through a scramble in front of the Detroit net. The goal completed Toronto’s comeback from 3-0 and 4-1 deficits. Miroslav Frycer added two goals for the Leafs.

Frycer had tied the score, 4-4, at 8:11 of the third. He picked up the puck while circling out of the Detroit end, then quickly turned and fired a rising 20-foot shot that beat Glen Hanlon to his glove side.

John Chabot had staked the Red Wings to a 1-0 lead at 11:19 of the first period. His low shot from the blue line beat goalie Ken Wregget on his stick side.

The Red Wings controlled play in the opening period but were hurt by their inability to convert scoring chances. They were unable to get a shot on net during a two-man advantage that lasted 1:25.

Detroit went ahead, 2-0, on Doug Halward’s first goal of the season, a power-play score 24 seconds into the middle period. Petr Klima and Brent Ashton then worked a 2-on-1 to give Detroit a 3-0 lead at 2:57.
