The San Diego Unified School District will draw up a detailed proposal with the San Diego Community College district for transforming the abandoned Dana Junior High School site in Point Loma into a college center, the board of education decided Tuesday.
The board asked its staff for a specific plan to take to Point Loma area residents within two to three months.
The community college district has tentatively offered to spend as much as $5 million to restore the badly vandalized school and establish a regional education center offering courses tailored to Point Loma residents. The district also would provide recreation fields and special courses for the nearby, cramped Point Loma High School.
The board has been castigated by Point Loma residents for several years for allowing the closed campus to deteriorate and become a dangerous eyesore. In addition, residents forced the board to back away from previous plans to solicit private development for building condominiums at the site.
