Local News in Brief : Big Feast for Jail Hogs

Share

It’s too late for Thanksgiving and too early for Christmas, but the hogs on the Peter J. Pitchess Honor Rancho are going to be happy--at least for a while.

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday accepted a donation of 109,000 pounds of dog food from DART Warehouse of Los Angeles on behalf of the Sheriff’s Department.

The dog food, which has expired use dates, is valued at $12,250 and will be used as animal feed over the next two months by hogs raised at the Saugus prison, according to Sheriff Sherman Block.

The hogs are part of a program in which inmates are taught to care for the animals. But after being fattened, the hogs are butchered and end up as part of the county jail system’s meat supply.
