Local News in Brief : Slumlord Charged Again
New criminal charges were filed Wednesday against convicted slumlord Vijaynand Sharma for alleged violations at two buildings he owns in Hollywood and downtown Los Angeles.
Sharma, 40, was accused of 12 fire, health, building and safety code violations at 5426 Virginia Ave., in Hollywood, and 22 similar violations at 1910 S. Los Angeles St. in central Los Angeles.
He faces a probation violation hearing Friday in connection with conditions at a South-Central Los Angeles apartment house at 3981 Menlo Ave., where an arson fire erupted Dec. 1. He is scheduled to be sentenced next Wednesday for 112 criminal violations at five other residential complexes he owns.
Each of the new counts carries a maximum penalty of six months in jail and/or a $1,000 fine. Arraignment was set for Jan. 7 in Los Angeles Municipal Court.
