South Carolina Won’t Schedule Miami Again

A University of South Carolina official, upset with alleged dirty play by Miami players in last weekend’s football game, during which a fight erupted, said Thursday the Gamecocks won’t play the Hurricanes anymore.

“No, we will not schedule them,” Athletic Director Bob Marcum said when asked of the possibility of future games.

A Gator Bowl official and Miami Athletic Director Sam Jankovich got into a shouting match in the press elevator after the game.

“I’m not going to discuss this until I hear from South Carolina officials,” Miami Coach Jimmy Johnson said.

Marcum said: “I sat down with (Coach) Joe Morrison and we decided that if that’s the type of football Miami wants to play, fine. But it is our privilege who we play, and we concluded that South Carolina will not play Miami anymore.”

The Gamecocks, who lost to Miami, 20-16, are the second team to announce they will no longer play the Hurricanes. After a 46-16 loss Oct. 10, Maryland said that Johnson had run up the score and the Terrapins would never play the Hurricanes again.

South Carolina’s decision to drop Miami from the schedule stems from a bench-clearing brawl that erupted after Miami’s Daniel Stubbs sacked South Carolina quarterback Todd Ellis, throwing him to the ground. Offsetting unsportsmanlike penalties were called on the play.
