Girl, 2, Spends Two Days With Her Slain Mother in Apartment

The stabbing death of a woman left her 2-year-old daughter alone with the body for two days in an apartment, where the girl played and drank juice from a container in the refrigerator.

“The little girl seems to be in good shape,” Homicide Inspector Jeffrey Brosch said Thursday night after the child was taken to the Children’s Home Society for care.

Police were called to the building by neighbors alarmed by a child scrambling along the window ledge of the eighth-floor apartment. Sheryl Mitchell, 22, was found dead in the living room.

“They went into the apartment to assist the little girl and what they found was her mother,” Inspector Ed Erdelatz said. “She had probably been there since Tuesday and the little girl was in there with her mother’s body.”
