A Federal Bankruptcy Court judge Monday approved the sale of the abandoned Los Feliz Stables for use as headquarters for a full-time Los Angeles Police Department mounted patrol.

Within hours after the ruling, financially troubled Ashkenazi Enterprises transferred title to the Atwater property to The Ahmanson Foundation, Police Cmdr. William Booth said. The Beverly Hills-based philanthropic organization paid $495,000 for the property to help the city find a home for the proposed horse unit.

The Ahmanson Foundation will retain title to the property and will probably lease it to the city for $1 a year, Booth said.

The Police Commission voted unanimously last week to recommend a $729,609 appropriation for facilities and equipment for the unit, which would replace the department’s 6-year old volunteer horse patrol with a 32-officer, full-time squad.
