County and state health officials will meet today with representatives of Inglewood Women’s Hospital to review a plan to correct widespread health violations at the facility, which specializes in abortions.

The hospital’s owner, Dr. Morton Barke, submitted the written plan last week in response to an inspection report alleging that the facility performed abortions in a blood-stained operating room and that doctors discharged surgery patients without checking their conditions. One official said unsanitary procedures and substandard treatment at the hospital, which performs up to 1,000 abortions a month, resembled “battlefield conditions.”

Barke promised in the written proposal that the hospital will hire additional personnel and review its procedures.

The Los Angeles County district attorney’s office is investigating the abortion-related death of a patient in January and the federal Department of Health and Human Services has authorized an inspection to determine whether the hospital should lose its Medicare reimbursements.
