Share

With little discussion, the Police Commission passed a proposed budget Tuesday that would add 248 officers to the Los Angeles Police Department and increase department funding for the next fiscal year by nearly $50 million. The force now stands at 7,000 officers.

The $467.2-million budget calls for a $5.3-million increase in salaries, $8.4 million to replace nearly 700 cars and 145 motorcycles, $3.4 million for new helicopters and almost $1 million to establish a full-time mounted unit. An additional 201 civilian employees also would be hired under the budget proposed by Chief Daryl F. Gates.

The budget must be approved by the City Council and Mayor Tom Bradley.
