Local News in Brief : Cunliffe Agreement

Share

Sylvia Cunliffe has signed an agreement recently negotiated with the City of Los Angeles to retire as head of the General Services Department, Senior Assistant City Atty. Fredrick Merkin said Tuesday.

The agreement calls for Cunliffe, 54, to remain on an unpaid leave of absence until March 4, her 55th birthday. On that date she will become eligible and begin receiving a full pension. She also will receive about 6 weeks’ unused vacation pay and half her unused sick leave benefits, a total settlement worth about $28,000.

The pact, approved by the City Council and Mayor Tom Bradley earlier this month, also provides that Cunliffe drop all legal actions against the city, including a workers compensation claim.

Bradley had sought to fire Cunliffe on charges of favoritism, nepotism and the improper use of arrest records to discredit an employee-critic. But the council’s majority favored a settlement of the dispute to spare the city potentially enormous legal costs if a firing led to a court battle.
