Local News in Brief : Irvine : Restrictions Extended for Business Complex
Restrictions on development in the prestigious, 2,300-acre Irvine Business Complex have been extended until next fall by the City Council.
In October, an outside audit showed that the city had approved more development than could be handled by roads in the area. A 1984 environmental impact report estimated that roads in the business park, including land around John Wayne Airport, could handle only traffic generated by 34.5 million square feet of office and industrial development. But the audit found that city planners had approved 39.5 million square feet in the complex, which is bounded by Campus Drive, the Costa Mesa Freeway, Barranca Parkway and San Diego Creek.
The council’s action Tuesday extends an emergency law barring new development in the area and restricting approved projects not yet under construction from adding more square footage. The restrictions will be in place until next October.
