Local News in Brief : Courts Resume Operation
Los Angeles Superior and Municipal courts resumed normal operations Wednesday but with increased workloads, as more than 1,000 court reporters, clerks, deputy public defenders and prosecutors ended a two-day sickout.
“We’ve got a backlog of work that’s piled up” but no serious problems, said Frank S. Zolin, Superior Court executive officer. The municipal courts, also hard hit by the absence of clerks and court reporters, had crowded court agendas but no major difficulties, said Frederick K. Ohlrich, chief deputy administrator.
The work stoppage staged by the Los Angeles County Court Coalition was a demonstration against county officials who have been unable to come to agreement with court employees on a new wage package. Many of those who participated in the sickout face the loss of two days’ pay if they cannot demonstrate that they were legitimately ill.
