Congressional leaders agreed to open another major federal office building in San Francisco. No money was appropriated in language incorporated in a joint appropriation bill, but congressional budget writers directed federal officials to begin “a competitive selection process for the lease-purchase of a building in San Francisco.” City officials began pushing to win the office facility, estimated to be about 430,000 square feet, after Oakland was awarded a contract for a federal building twice that size earlier this year. The city faced the loss of about 3,500 jobs because of transfers to Oakland. A compromise allows the San Francisco building to be used after Oakland’s facility fills to capacity, expected some time after 1993.
