Local News in Brief : Fullerton : 9 People Left Homeless by Blaze in Apartment

A fire started early Thursday morning by a child playing with a cigarette lighter left nine people homeless at the Banburry Cross Apartments, fire officials said.

No injuries were no reported in the 7:15 a.m. fire. A Fullerton Fire Department spokeswoman said the fire at the apartment complex in the 500 block of E. Imperial Highway started in the bedroom of a downstairs apartment unit. The flames traveled up a wall and into the unit above.

Nine people--a mother and her three small children in the downstairs apartment, and a family of five in the upstairs apartment--were displaced by the blaze, said a spokeswoman for the American Red Cross’ county chapter.

The fire, which was extinguished in 2 1/2 hours, caused an estimated $60,000 in damage, fire officials said.

The homeless families were being given shelter, food and clothing by the county chapter of the American Red Cross.
