Local News in Brief : Suit Filed on Initiative

Share

Lawndale resident Nancy J. Marthens filed suit in Los Angeles Superior Court on Wednesday seeking to force the City Council to put an initiative on the April 12 ballot exactly as it was worded on the initiative petition.

The measure, which obtained sufficient signatures to qualify it for the ballot, would require voter approval for any public development or redevelopment project costing more than $1 million, including financing. However, the council must formally vote to place it on the ballot.

City Atty. David J. Aleshire said at the council’s Dec. 10 meeting that the measure as worded by petitioners was “unclear” and “misleading.” As a result, the council instructed him to reword the measure. At the council meeting late last night, council members were considering which version to place on the ballot.

Marthens’ attorney Jack Allen called the original measure “a model of clarity” and said a court hearing is scheduled for Tuesday on the suit.
