Dovie Beams de Villagran, the former mistress of deposed Philippine President Ferdinand E. Marcos, was sentenced today to eight years in prison for defrauding Southern California banks of $18 million in real estate loans.

De Villagran claimed an arterial blockage and the AIDS virus had rendered her a “borderline schizophrenic,” but U.S. District Judge Pamela Rymer said there is “no substantial evidence to this day of a serious psychiatric problem.” De Villagran’s husband, Sergio Villagran, was sentenced to five years in prison for his role in the loan fraud. Villagran pleaded guilty to nine counts of bank fraud, but said he relied on his wife’s “business expertise” to control the couple’s vast real estate holdings, including a lavish mansion in Pasadena.
