The dean of the Graduate School of Education at the University of California, Berkeley, is reportedly among the three finalists in the search for New York City’s next public schools chancellor.

Bernard Gifford, a former deputy schools chancellor in New York, said he had a tough interview for the job last week. “They didn’t spend much time on courtesies and niceties,” he said. “They immediately started throwing fast balls.”

In addition to the Berkeley dean, the other finalists are reported to be Laval Wilson, head of the Boston school system, and Richard Green, Minneapolis school superintendent.

The three men have been interviewed by a search panel that is expected to give the New York City Board of Education a list of up to five finalists Monday. The board has said it hopes to choose the replacement for retiring schools Chancellor Nathan Quinones by Jan. 1.
