Local News in Brief : Anaheim : Anti-Drug Balloon Winds Up in Texas

Share

A red balloon containing an anti-drug message journeyed from Riverdale School all the way to Texas, Anaheim students recently discovered.

Pupils at the school, which is part of Orange Unified School District, launched 400 balloons, donated by Kaiser-Permanente Hospital, last October. The balloon launchings were part of the school’s observance of Red Ribbon Week, which included activities aimed at curbing drug abuse.

One of the Anaheim-launched balloons landed on a ranch 30 miles north of San Angelo, Tex. It was found by Dr. Donald W. Hopkins, a Belton physician who was hunting on the ranch.

Riverdale Principal Jim Luft said that Hopkins informed the school of his find and that the students were thrilled at the long flight of their “air mail.” The Texans also are enjoying the balloon discovery, Luft said. “Dr. Hopkins is showing all his patients and friends in Texas the balloon, and they are all quite excited about it,” he added.
