Local News in Brief : Probation for Amnesty Lie
In what prosecutors said was the first sentencing in Los Angeles for lying on an amnesty application, U.S. District Judge Robert Takasugi on Monday placed a 44-year-old Gardena bank teller on four years of probation.
Florencio Marroquin was accused of telling U.S. Immigration and Naturalization officials that he had been out of the country no more than 57 days since 1982 when, in fact, he had been absent for much longer.
Marroquin pleaded guilty to one count of making a false statement to a government agency. Under the law, he could have received up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
