ALPINE, Calif.--A 65-year-old man was hospitalized with bullet fragments in his jaw and spine Monday night after he was shot in the head at close range during a mid-afternoon robbery in Alpine.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department said two men accosted Luis Estrada, who was walking in the 2000 block of Ranchito Lane, about 3 p.m. They demanded money, then shot him in the head. A Sheriff’s Department spokesman said it was not known whether the men took any money from Estrada.

Estrada, whose address was unknown, was listed in serious but stable condition in the surgical intensive care unit at Sharp Memorial Hospital with bullet fragments in his jaw and spine. Because the fragments did no neurological damage, Estrada did not undergo surgery, a spokeswoman said.
