- Local dancer Joy Griffin won $3,000 for her modern dance performance, taking the third-place national award in the National Society of Arts and Letters ballet and modern dance competition three years ago.

This year the society is sponsoring a short story writing competition. Unpublished writers between the ages of 19 and 30 (those who have not reached their 30th birthday on June 4, 1988) who wish to enter must submit their short story entries by Jan. 15 to the local chapter.

The winning local story will be entered in the national contest, where the first-, second- and third-place winners will receive $5,000, $3,000 and $2,000 respectively. The top three local winners will receive $100, $75 and $50.

Entrants should mail three copies of a short story between 3,000 and 6,000 words to Jean Isaacs, chairwoman of the local society.
