Berne, who was on staff at the Hospital of the Good Samaritan, was part of a team of specialists stationed at a U.S. base near the border of India and Burma in the early years of the war. Even their nurses were recruited from the Los Angeles area and trained here before being shipped as a unit overseas. Berne received the Bronze Star for his wartime services.

Berne, who earned his medical degree from the University of Iowa in 1927, is survived by his wife, Esther; two sons; a sister; six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Jan. 9 at the Hospital of the Good Samaritan. Donations in his name may be sent to the USC Department of Surgery Research Fund, 1200 N. State St., Room 9900, Los Angeles 90033.
