Pope John Paul II announced that an encyclical will be published soon on social issues affecting “the conscience of man today.” The Pope disclosed the new encyclical, a pastoral letter to the entire Roman Catholic Church, at the end of a Christmas greeting address to cardinals and other Vatican officials. The document will coincide with the 20th anniversary of the social encyclical “Populorum Progressio” (Development of Peoples), published by Pope Paul VI in 1967. The pontiff said the encyclical, his seventh since his election as Pope in 1978, will “reveal the new themes and respond to the new problems of social development in the past 20 years.
