Capo Valley Overwhelmed in Washington

Archbishop Carroll High School opened the second half with a 9-2 burst and pulled away with a fourth-quarter streak on the way to a 90-75 boys’ basketball victory over Capistrano Valley Tuesday.

The Cougars (7-4) trailed, 40-38, at halftime. But Carroll’s quickness took over in the final 16 minutes. Carroll, a perennial power in the Washington area, is a top 20 team this season.

Eric Hill, a 6-foot 1-inch guard, led the 9-2 run that gave the Lions a 49-40 advantage. Todd Marinovich’s jumper pulled the Cougars to within 49-42, but Hill scored again and Carroll (7-2) increased its lead to 12, 65-53, after three quarters.

The Lions (7-2) outscored Capistrano Valley, 15-7, in the first four minutes of the final period. Hill, held to five points in the first half, scored eight in the third quarter and nine in the fourth to finish with 22. Many of those points came on inside moves. He also had seven rebounds.

“We came out pretty well, but our big men couldn’t control Hill,” Cougar Coach Mark Thornton said. ‘We played them even in the first half, but their quickness just wore us down at the end.”

Capistrano Valley led during the first half and held its final lead at 31-30 after Charles Lockard (22 points) hit two jump shots. But consecutive layups by Hill and Tom Moten (18 points) gave Carroll a lead it never relinquished, 34-31.

For Capistrano Valley, Jim Waikle had 22 points, 6 rebounds and 3 blocked shots. After scoring 15 Monday night against Bishop Ireton in the Cougars’ two-game trip to the Washington area, Marinovich was held to five by Carroll.
