The Angolan guerrilla group UNITA said Wednesday that it has won a big battle against government troops and has captured the town of Munhango in central Angola. A statement distributed in Lisbon said that 28 government soldiers were killed in the conflict Tuesday, while the rebels lost three men, with 26 wounded.

UNITA (National Union for the Total Independence of Angola) has been fighting the Marxist government in Luanda since Angola gained independence from Portugal in 1975. UNITA is backed by South Africa and the United States.
