Local News in Brief : Drug-Abuse Tape Grants
KCET-TV and actor Paul Newman’s Scott Newman Foundation will be receiving $1.3 million in federal grants to produce videotapes warning schoolchildren about the dangers of drugs, the U.S. Department of Education announced.
KCET, which will receive $900,000, and the Newman foundation, which will receive $436,198, are among eight contractors selected nationwide under a $5-million program to begin work immediately on 30 videotapes to be completed for the 1988 school year. The films will be aimed at elementary, junior high and high school students.
KCET is a Public Broadcasting System station in Los Angeles. The foundation is named for the actor’s son, who died in 1978 from drug and alcohol abuse.
