Local News in Brief : Anaheim : Martin Mitchell Named Interim Chief of Police
Martin Mitchell, a 30-year Police Department veteran, has been named interim chief of police to replace retiring Chief Jimmie D. Kennedy, city officials announced Thursday.
Mitchell, 55, who was promoted to captain last year, served as commander of the operations support division before being named to his new post.
Mitchell joined the force in 1957 as a patrol officer and has since served in the traffic, detective and administrative divisions.
Acting City Manager Bob Simpson said Mitchell, as with Kennedy, had been planning to retire at the end of the month but decided to accept the interim post until a permanent chief is found.
“I’m confident this will provide for a continuity of leadership and an orderly transitional period for our Police Department,” Simpson said.
Kennedy, 53, will retire on Wednesday, after serving 29 years on the force. He had been chief of police since 1983.
