Tribal guerrillas shot and killed a Bengali family of six in the northeastern state of Tripura, the United News of India reported Saturday. Four other people were injured in the attack Friday at Shivpura village, 70 miles northeast of Agartala, the state capital, the news agency said.

The victims were Bengali settlers, who are often the targets of tribal guerrillas. The rebels have been campaigning since 1978 for a separate state. The latest killings bring to 77 the number of deaths this year blamed on the Tribal National Volunteers, the most active guerrilla group. Last year, 108 people in Tripura were killed by suspected guerrillas.
