And what will $32 buy? Perhaps some copy paper, which is always in short supply at the end of the year; or perhaps it will supplement soft-bound books for the English teacher who is trying to teach literature with 10 books and 35 students. The money will not be wasted.
By denigrating our schools, it is easy enough not to support them. It is a sort of conscience-free exercise in stinginess. It is also shortsighted. Teachers become discouraged and burned out when the citizenry turns on them and withholds appreciation and support. Today the voter who went to dinner has just added a gross amount of calories. Tomorrow we will all be the poorer.
