GIs in Germany Get Hot Line to Help Net Spies
American soldiers in Europe were urged Monday to use a new “dial-a-spy” hot line to help catch spies and foreign agents trying to recruit them for espionage.
The Stars and Stripes, the unofficial daily newspaper of the U.S. armed forces, published telephone numbers for soldiers to use to give information to U.S. military intelligence.
The newspaper said the hot lines directly connected to army counterespionaage units were created because of an increase in undercover activity in Europe.
Lt. Col. Jon Baker, chief of counterintelligence for the 66th Military Intelligence Brigade in Munich, told the newspaper that foreign agents have stepped up their campaign to recruit U.S. service members and civilian employees to spy for the Soviet KGB and other East Bloc espionage agencies.
