Fear that rival Atlantic City gangs might engage in a repeat of the violence that marred a national high school basketball tournament during the weekend prompted organizers to cancel the remaining games in Absecon, N.J.

A 21-year-old Atlantic City woman was shot and at least four other people, including an Atlantic City councilman, were stabbed in a halftime brawl during a game between Mater Dei High of Santa Ana, Calif., and Atlantic City High Saturday night in the Seagull tournament at Holy Spirit High School.

The melee had nothing to do with the tournament or the game, police said. Investigators said the violence was an eruption of a simmering dispute between young tenants of two housing projects in nearby Atlantic City.
