Westwood : Lawsuit on UCLA Trademark

The regents of the University of California are suing an Ohio sportswear manufacturer for using the UCLA name on its apparel.

The suit, filed in federal court against Just Sweats of Columbus, seeks damages and an injunction to stop all sales of UCLA-imprinted items pending a judgment. It charges the company with trademark infringement and misappropriation of commercial rights.

Just Sweats operates 10 retail stores in the Columbus area and nine in Kentucky.

The UCLA name is a registered trademark, and anyone planning to sell merchandise bearing the name must first get permission from the UC Board of Regents, according to university officials.
