Skier Falls to Death as Cable Car Starts Without Conductor
A cable car loaded with about 50 skiers started with its door open and without its conductor today, and one teen-age skier fell 50 feet to his death.
Police said the conductor was still helping people aboard the car at the bottom of a Merano ski slope when the cable car started without warning.
Two other teen-agers were injured when they also fell to the parking lot below the valley station, police said.
Some witnesses said the three youths may have jumped in panic but police said they fell from the car.
