Edmonton center Wayne Gretzky will be out two weeks because of ligament strain in his right knee, the Oilers announced Monday.

Gretzky, winner of eight consecutive MVP awards, injured his knee last Wednesday against the Philadelphia Flyers. He sat out a 2-0 loss to the Washington Capitals Saturday.

The extent of the injury was upgraded to a first-degree right knee ligament strain after Gretzky was examined by Oiler team doctor Gordon Cameron, Oiler spokesman Steve Knowles said.

Gretzky, 26, has been durable since turning professional at age 17 with the World Hockey Assn. A shoulder injury in 1984 ended a consecutive game streak at 362.

He has led the National Hockey League in scoring each of his eight previous seasons.
