Don’t weep too much if you missed Ingmar Bergman’s much- admired “Fanny and Alexander,” which aired Saturday night on KPBS-TV Channel 15. More top films are coming. KPBS has begun what the station terms a series of “modern film classics.” A dozen Saturday night screenings of mostly foreign films are scheduled over the next three months.

In planning the movies, KPBS assistant program manager Peggy Cooley noted that the films selected are a different type than those shown on local independent stations such as Channels 6 and 51.

“These are something special for San Diego,” Cooley said. “These are some some of the best . . . international films.”

Among the films are Fellini’s “Juliet of the Spirits” and “8 1/2,” “Day of the Triffids,” based on the popular science fiction novel; and the cinema remake of John Millington Synge’s “The Playboy of the Western World.”

Agatha Christie’s 1982 thriller “Spider’s Web” will air Saturday. All shows are at 9 p.m.

And if you missed “Fanny and Alexander,” the chances are it will return within 12 months, Cooley said. “We’ve had a lot of phone calls on it. I promise we’ll bring it back again.”
