Local News in Brief : Ex-Officers’ Trial to Jurors

Jury deliberations have begun in the trial of two former Los Angeles police officers charged with robbing a jewelry store and attempting to murder an exotic dancer to collect on a life insurance policy.
The Los Angeles Superior Court jury began deliverations Monday after hearing evidence for about six months.
Prosecutors alleged that former officers Richard Ford, 47, and Robert Von Villas, 44, formulated a “brutal” plan in 1983 to rape, torture and murder Joan Loguercio, 37, of Granada Hills to collect a $100,000 life insurance benefit.
Ford and Von Villas were arrested in July, 1983, before the alleged plot could be carried out. Loguercio died in March, 1986, following a two-year battle with cancer.
The two men are also charged with staging a $210,000 holdup at Schaffer and Sons Jewelers in Northridge Fashion Center in November, 1982.
